Alison MacLeod and Panos Karnezis

Alison MacLeod

“There’s a giddying range of things to think about in MacLeod’s collection of short stories, which range from gleeful comedy to aching tragedy… from a man who goes chasing after a pregnant woman in the midst of a riot at Ikea, to ECT patient Gloria who thrills to the presence of her anaesthetist, ‘Dr Numb’ ” The Guardian

Alison MacLeod’s collection of short stories, Fifteen Modern Tales of Attraction, is one of ten books shortlisted for 'The Book to Talk About in 2009' Award - part of World Book Day.

Born in Montreal, Canada, she now lives in Brighton. She is Professor of Contemporary Fiction at the University of Chichester.

“Her stories create intimate worlds... and make the reader live in them with an intensity which is haunting, disturbing and above all beguiling.” Helen Dunmore

Panos Karnezis

"Sly, witty, fantastical, and tragic, with just a touch of something old-fashioned about them...A terrific read." The Seattle Times

In a nameless Greek village, the lives of its citizens (the priest, the whore, the doctor, the seamstress, the mayor) and even its animals (a centaur, a parrot that recites Homer, a horse called History) are entwined. As their lives intersect, their hidden crimes, their little infamies, are revealed, in a place full of passion, cruelty, and deep reserves of black humor.

"Fierce, twisted, darkly funny stories...[Karnezis] has a sharp, unsentimental eye for contemporary Greek life” The New Yorker

Panos Karnezis was born in Greece in 1967 and moved to England in 1992.

Chasing Tales

A Litfest and Dukes Theatre partnership

Chasing Tales is a new series of performance storytelling events that invite the audience on a verbal journey into old and new stories, where words are unleashed creating boundary-pushing live performances.
Storytelling is far, far older than writing, and comes with no scripts to memorise – just storytellers with a head full of tales to choose from. Each audience, each venue, is different, so stories are rarely told in the same way twice.

So what you get is a dynamic, once-in-a-lifetime experience every time. And as the story unfolds in your mind, you can’t help but get completely drawn in. It’s the cinema of the imagination, with the energy and intensity of live performance.

Join us for an exhilarating selection of the UK’s most spellbinding storytellers.
